spring cleaning week #2: the living/family room

Sunday, March 17, 2013

We are now in Week #2 of my Spring Cleaning Blog Series. How did week #1 go for you? Isn't it a great feeling knowing you have a bright and shiny kitchen and dining room? I love it and knowing I only have to tackle one room at a time is very motivating.
Today is the first room of week #2 - the living/family room. If you have one of each of these rooms this may feel like a large task but there usually isn't much going on in these rooms so don't be discouraged. I have mentioned before we have very simplistic décor going on right now. With our two kiddos being three and under we don't want a lot going on including nice new furniture. So we are making do with what we have until the kiddos are a little older.
To start go ahead and inventory your cleaning caddy. Check to see what you have and what you need - i.e. more trash bags, paper towels (I use coffee filters), a new cloth rag, and lets not forget your cleaning checklist, print it here.
Cleaning Checklist:
  • Clean/dust ceiling fan and light (if applicable)
  • Dust art/mirrors
  • Dust lights and shades
  • Wipe down window sills
  • Remove items from mantel/shelves/drawers and wipe down surface
  • Dust and purge items from mantel/shelves/drawers and return
  • Dust/polish furniture
  • Dust T.V. and electronics
  • Whisk/vacuum sofas
  • Lift/move sofas and remove items that are underneath
  • Wash/spot clean sofa cushions
  • Launder dog/cat bed (if applicable)
  • Wipe down walls and baseboards
  • Wipe down switch plates and outlets
  • Wipe down doors (including top ledge of door), knobs and trim
  • Organize DVDs/CDs
  • Sweep and mop/vacuum floor
  • Shampoo rug/carpet
Eventually we will be able to step up our décor. We will be going for coastal cottage with Hampton flair. One day...we are doing just fine with what we have. We have two rooms where one should be the living room and the other the family room. We decided to make the living room our family room and the other room is divided into playroom and my husbands office space. So here it is.

We use a serving tray to keep track of our remotes.

Alright, three rooms down...wooohooo!

But, it was helpful for me to intentionally think of ways I could make our lives easier – without committing tons of time or planning.
